Investment with IDATA pays off for Porirua City Council

PCC has reinvested heavily in new data technologies over the past year to accommodate the numerous sizable database systems required to manage the City’s infrastructure, assets and financials. IDATA Resolutions have kept us up-to-date with the right software tools and backup hardware to suit our forever-changing environment. EMC Networker continues to prove itself as a highly available and resilient product that's always there when we need it.IDATA, with their in-depth knowledge in their area of specialization, melded our need for reduced administration and tape handling to deliver a more efficient restoration service to our customers.

The review document was a complete and full analysis of the outgoing backup methodology, which had been designed for a simple model of individual backups and servers, but was no longer appropriate for the growing data and more complex systems that PCC introduced. We now have a system that delivers better service to our customers by reducing significantly the time to restore service through less tape handling and lower administration. This was done through extending Networker's feature set, extending the SAN to use virtual tape and the introduction of LTO4 tape library hardware. Porirua City Council

Victoria University

As data grows so too does the need for new and improved data storage and availability solutions. At Victoria University Wellington (VUW), data was more than doubling annually, from both new and existing sources. Systems became stretched, out of date and dangerously inadequate.

IDATA Resolutions implemented strategies – at 3 levels – to provide the appropriate data management infrastructure for VUW. IDATA developed backup and recovery architecture and design modifications, new archival platforms for file and email data, at the same time supplying ongoing operational management of archive services.

The backup and recovery solution involved end-to-end infrastructure redesign, full implementation and ubiquitous support through an integrated VTL for fast backup/recovery while also providing DR capabilities.

VUW and IDATA selected NAS as the dedicated file-serving platform upon which archive services could be seamlessly delivered to staff and students. Archive solutions for file data (EMC Rainfinity) and email (EMC SourceOne) were chosen and implemented.

Ongoing operational management saw the integration of IDATA support services with the VUW ITS support desk and systems support teams to reliably operate and manage archive platforms.

Data continues to grow at Vic, but now with IDATA, the problems associated with the management of ongoing growth are resolved.

Business As Usual

Toyota Finance need an environment that promises a high level of disaster recovery – to get business back up and running quickly – essential for their dealership network to operate and function.

The solution consists of shared storage and array based replication of critical hosts and applications, providing an automated and testable site failover capability.

IDATA Resolutions provided Toyota Finance with the availability solutions they needed, with a virtualized environment (based on EMC NAS storage) reducing hardware and associated costs. VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) provides regular testable disaster recovery protection with no impact on the production environment.

Toyota Finance now utilizes data replication across the IP network with native EMC Celerra functionality, which is fully compatible with VMware Site Recovery Manager, allowing seamless integration between the storage, replication and failover capabilities."Porirua City Council has been using the Networker backup product over many years through its various iterations as it has evolved, on UNIX and MS Windows platforms. This is one area of our infrastructure that we don't "skimp" on. Toyota Finance

Porirua City Council

PCC reinvested heavily in new technologies over the past year including blade servers, virtualisation and unified communications. The "staples" are still there and growing at the usual rates: email, files, structured document management and the numerous sizable database systems required to manage the City’s infrastructure assets and financials.

Having been IDATA's client for a number of years, the relationship that developed has always been more than just pushing product. A cycle we have entered into has effectively become one of major update, optimise it 18 months down the track, and then another 18 months later perform another major update. This keeps us up-to-date with the right software tools and backup hardware to suit the forever changing environment. EMC Networker continues to prove itself as a highly available and resilient product that's always there when we need it.

We recently requested assistance from IDATA to perform one of these major reviews. Their in-depth knowledge in their area of specialisation melded our need for reduced administration and tape handling to deliver a more efficient restoration service to our customers. The review document was a complete and full analysis of the outgoing backup methodology that while suited for a simple model of individual backups for a smallish number of servers, was no longer appropriate for the growing data and more complex systems that PCC introduced.

We now have a system that delivers better service to our customers by reducing significantly the time to restore service through less tape handling and lower administration. This was done through extending Networker's feature set, extending the SAN to use virtual tape and the introduction of LTO4 tape library hardware."

”...our appreciation for the restores done by Paul Hopping (IDATA Resolutions Engineer) during the EOS 6.3 release weekend. He was really helpful and got us through a weekend that was throwing everything at us. His good work and attitude was very much appreciated by a team that was under pressure. Much appreciated by all the team.”

Robyne Lee, Solutions Manager, Gen-i

“After many years of fairly faultless running of Legato Networker CitiPower Pty & Powercor Australia Ltd had reason to engage iData to solve a particularly significant fault in the Windows Networker client. In partnership with internal and external staff IData provided exemplary technical fault finding and ‘end to end’ problem resolution management, which resulted in the issue being resolved very quickly. Our hats go off to iData for such highly polished and satisfaction inducing work.”

James Tod, IT Capacity Manager, CitiPower Ltd & Powercor Australia Ltd

With Email now established firmly as the business communications tool of choice, the safeguarding of important Email assets has become a major concern for business. The IDATA resolutions Email resolution, EmailXtender, is a storage and retrieval system that makes enterprise Email easier to administer and use – capture, index, archive and retrieve.

“…since we had EmailXtender installed by IDATA resolutions, we have not had any problems at all. We are able to retrieve anything with no fuss, no bother, no pain…it works for us – I’m totally sold on it (EmailXtender).... IDATA resolutions delivered the right solution…”

Gary Weston-Webb (Group Manager IS) Te Puni Kokiri

“…we’ve been using NetWorker for the best part of a decade and have found the support from IDATA resolutions to be outstanding, in fact, over and above what they are contracted to do. IDATA resolutions is always there for us. They are extremely reliable. From time to time, we look at alternative software, but the one thing that keeps us with EMC NetWorker is the great support – fantastic support – from IDATA resolutions…”

The Show Must Go On

Kordia™ operates and maintains an impressive network of transmission infrastructure delivering television and radio programming into homes throughout Australasia. Kordia™ was very recently given the big ISO tick for its ability to manage and recover its data, which is in itself something to write about. IDATA resolutions designed and implemented Kordia™’s data protection infrastructure, ensuring business continuity, providing full operational support and eliminating any risk of data loss. This was put to the test when Kordia™’s Wellington file server crashed. IDATA resolutions enabled business continuance by providing a complete and accessible replicated data set (in an alternative location) within 5 minutes. Nothing was lost and when the server was brought back on line, all changes on the disaster recovery server were replicated back to the original server. As IDATA resolutions had RepliStor sitting on both servers, no data was at risk, therefore the pressure was off for Kordia™, also enabling them to thoroughly troubleshoot and test before reinstating the original server. IDATA resolutions’ team of highly skilled engineers saved the day!

“IDATA resolutions provided a solution to a problem we hoped we’d never encounter. Thankfully, when we did need it, it was there – and business continuance happened exactly the way it was supposed to.”

Stephen Beckwith (Infrastructure Manager) Kordia™
